When I came out at a summer camp, I was the only lesbian around. All my friends distanced themselves from me because they think that absolutely every lesbian in the world only comes out to the people they like. It was sad, and I didn’t know of it until my roommate told me. Now I’m probably going to stay in the closet for a long time.

When I came out my mom had put a movie and a couple bags of gummi bears (which’re my favorite) on my dresser while I slept. Inside the bags she wrote a note that said, “If you ever have anything to tell me, I’m here. Love, Mom.” I went into her room crying and said, “Mommy, I’m gay.” She hugged me and said she was glad I finally could say it to her and that she always knew inside about me being a lesbian and that she loved me no matter what. When I came out, I just got home from school. A friend had asked me if I was gay, because I never talk about cute boys. I answered, “Yes.” So I opened the kitchen door and went like, “Hey, mom! I just told a girl I am a lesbian.” Her reaction made me realize that I hadn’t come out to her yet, which I thought I had. Her reaction was good though. (16)
