When I came out to my mum, she hugged me and said she didn’t care. To this day, I’ve come out to everyone I know. (M/14/Gay)

When I came out to my teacher, it was just the best moment in my life. She had to guess what’s up and when she got it, I started crying and she hugged me immediately and told me that everything’s alright. All of that was about 2 1/2 years ago and she still supports me so much, because I haven’t told anyone else yet. I am so glad that I told her, because I couldn’t ask for better support!! (F/16/Gay)

When I came out as gay I told a friend and they said to me good luck. I don’t know how to tell my family in case they don’t like me any more because they do not like gays. But I don’t care and I am coming out gay in the next few days to them and don’t care what they say. (M/17/Gay)
Story #1483
When I came out, it was to my best friend after she told me that she had a crush on me. She said that she was happy for me and has been nothing but supportive ever since. A week later, I came out to two other female friends. I live in the Caribbean and our society (as well as my family) is conservative, religious, and highly homophobic so I’m not in a hurry to come out publicly. One day, I’ll tell my parents and maybe my extended family. (M/17/Gay)

When I came out I was 12 and it was to the boy I had a crush on. I passed a note saying I was gay and also saying I liked him. He accepted it very well and soon the whole school knew and MOSTLY everybody accepted me.

When I came out, it was to a friend at school. I just brought him to the library and told him. He hugged me so hard that he knocked the breath out of me, then said that he saw me the same, just that he knew more about me. Yay! (M/12/Gay)
Story #1464
When I came out gay it was to my mother. She was very angry but then later on said it’s your life, you can do what you want. Then after coming out gay I soon got a boyfriend and we do what we want in the house. My mother says at least you are happy, then I am too. (17/Gay)
Story #1463
When I came out my “parents” basically kicked me out and blamed my cousin (who is also gay) and her parents for it. My aunt and uncle adopted me. I lost friends when I moved and my birth parents don’t even acknowledge my existence let alone my orientation, but I’m happy I’m gay and won’t change for anyone. (F/14/Gay)
Story #1449
When I came out for the first time in real offline life, it was to my college friends. They were talking about how flamboyant some LGBT people are and they were getting kinda homophobic, so I got a bit angry and I just said, “Guys, but actually I’m gay…” When I realised what I just did, I started shaking, but they didn’t even care and they said that they understood not all of us were like that. I felt like I was freed from a really heavy weight. I still can’t believe it was that easy.
