Story #1470

When I came out I was 12 and it was to the boy I had a crush on. I passed a note saying I was gay and also saying I liked him. He accepted it very well and soon the whole school knew and MOSTLY everybody accepted me.

Story #1468

When I came out it didn’t sit so well with my mom. I figured that she would be more understanding than my dad, and she’s liberal and agnostic, but she sort of got confused, I think, and imagines I just don’t like girly things. Since, she’s brought it up only a few times, usually to make sure I haven’t told anyone (I’ve told lots, she just doesn’t know). Fortunately, my dad started talking to me about this non-binary person on NPR and said that while he’d never thought much about these identities before, he was cool with them. I think I have a chance of understanding with him! 🏳️‍🌈 (Non-binary AFAB/Gynephilic)

Story #1467

When I came out my mom yelled, “WHAAAAAT?!” so loud in the car that sometimes I can still hear how my eardrums rang. After I told her I was in love with this amazing girl she removed all of my pictures around the apartment and told me that I’m going to hell, that one of us would get cancer and die. I was in such relief after I came out that it didn’t matter what she did or say because I had just lifted the heaviest weight off my shoulders. A weight that I had been carrying around a loooong time. I’ve never felt so light. Haha sorry mom :p

Story #1469

When I came out as a lesbian to my family while having dinner at a restaurant, I remember my moms face going from this 🙂 to this :-(. The day after, she told me she didn’t want to hear who I’m dating, or even meet that person and what we do as a couple. Since then she bothers me by saying things like “Look at that boy, isn’t he cute?” I wish I knew how religion can be more important than the happiness and well-being of someone. (Andy, 17, Portugal)

Story #1465

When I came out, it was to a friend at school. I just brought him to the library and told him. He hugged me so hard that he knocked the breath out of me, then said that he saw me the same, just that he knew more about me. Yay! (M/12/Gay)

Story #1466

When I came out I was outed to my mom by someone who I still don’t know and it’s a fresh story. I felt soo relieved and I felt like this huge weight left off my shoulders but at the same I was worried about my mom and told her I love her. She told me she loves me too. I hope she will be better and better about that. (Leo, 19/Bisexual)

Story #1464

When I came out gay it was to my mother. She was very angry but then later on said it’s your life, you can do what you want. Then after coming out gay I soon got a boyfriend and we do what we want in the house. My mother says at least you are happy, then I am too. (17/Gay)

Story #1463

When I came out my “parents” basically kicked me out and blamed my cousin (who is also gay) and her parents for it. My aunt and uncle adopted me. I lost friends when I moved and my birth parents don’t even acknowledge my existence let alone my orientation, but I’m happy I’m gay and won’t change for anyone. (F/14/Gay)

Story #1462

When I came out it was today and to my best friend. I was crying at 3am and she saw me and asked why am I sad. I said I’m not sad, I’m lesbian, and I’m ready to share it with the world. She smiled and gave me the biggest hug. A huge weight has been lifted. (25/Lesbian)

Story #1461

When I came out it was to my 10-year-old daughter. What precipitated it was that she confessed to me that she had a crush on a female friend and was confused by her feelings. I explained to her that is natural to have same-sex attractions and when she asked how I knew, I told her that I am homosexual but I denied that part of myself until my late thirties. I made her promise that if she comes to terms with any orientation she is that she doesn’t wait as long as I did (Rachel, 46/Lesbian)
