When I came out it was because my friends all saw a contact on my phone with a love heart emoji (my secret boyfriend). All my friends were asking who she was, and I just said to one of my closest friends, “It’s a guy,” and she was so supportive and we talked and she’s helping me come out to everyone else. Thanks so much x (M/17/Gay)

When I came out, I told my mom in the night that I’m gay. She was very supportive and told me that she will always love me. I didn’t come out to my dad because I think that he doesn’t understand. (M/15/Gay)

When I came out it was at a party last weekend. I was drunk, and one of my friends went on my phone and saw my photos! I just said it there and then and everyone was so nice and gave me hugs. My male best friend still loves me, and we have even become closer. A huge weight has been lifted off my shoulder — only my parents left! (M/18/Gay)

When I came out it was on Friday at a party. One of my friends went on my phone and found some photos of shirtless guys. So I just confessed right there and then. It could not have gone any better, got so many hugs and kind words, and my best friend who is straight doesn’t care and is super supportive. So happy! (M/19/Gay)

When I came out as gay at 14, I was so scared… My mom is the first person to find out my orientation… I was scared about her reaction because we are living in a post-communist country… Now I have a relationship with an awesome guy. My mom asks me when I’m going to marry him but the law doesn’t accept gay marriage… A story with a happy end 🙂 (M/18/Gay)

When I came out I first did it in front of my parents and siblings when I was 25, and they were very accepting although I wasn’t sure how they will get it. Four years later I came out to my bigger family and friends online and that went a little less smooth and some decided to distance themselves, but I guess it gets better in time and also you meet new friends as you go on with life. When I came out I was 12 years old at the time and had come out as bi just a few months earlier. I spent the entire summer between sixth and seventh grade just questioning my sexuality, and it was great having such a supportive group of friends helping me discover who I was. Fast forward to today, where I can’t tell anyone in high school because of my fear of being bullied. So far only my middle school friends, my little brother, and some teachers know, but I can’t wait for the day when I can be my gay self in front of anyone. (F/16/Lesbian)
Story #1719
When I came out it was to my friends and little brother. It was Christmas evening and we had just finished hanging out and exchanging gifts, and as they were leaving they were talking about girls or something and then one of them asked if I was straight. I looked at them blankly, not knowing what to say, but I knew I couldn’t say yes ’cause it would be obvious I was unsure or lying. Then I said, “I guess I’m coming out now.” They were all surprised but really accepting. They acted like they didn’t care but in a good way. I was really happy that night and fell asleep with a smile on my face. But the best part is that I don’t have to lie or be uncomfortable when they ask if I like this girl or if I think this girl is cute or something. (M/19/Gay)

When I came out it was to a theatre group chat. I basically said, “Guys, I found Narnia!” And someone asked “Where?” And so I said, “In the closet. Surprise, I’m gay!” And everyone was really accepting! Still haven’t told my family though, haha. (M/15/Gay)
Story #1716
When I came out on the 22nd to my parents, they didn’t accept that I was gay. They blamed it on “hormones” and that I’m “only 15.” It really made me sad and is still hurting me; living a lie and hating myself is not fun. I wish they were more accepting. [I’ve told a friend at school, a cousin, a sibling, and 2 other people irl] (M/15/Gay)
