When I came out it was via Facebook private messages to one of my best male friends. He often asked me if I had any crushes in my life or anyone special that he should know of. After days of denying I finally admitted that I had a crush on a girl. His response was amazing; he basically said that “that’s so cute, you should tell me more of this girl that stole your heart.” I never felt so happy in my life.

When I came out to my cousin with a letter she was like, “So?” I thought she would freak out or something but she was too calm and I was like, “So??? Give me a freakin reaction, woman!!!” Then she said, “I always knew and plus I remember that you were telling me how much you loved this girl when you were in fifth grade.” I was like, “Oh…”

When I came out to my younger sister, we were on our neighbor’s trampoline, playing the non-alcoholic version of Never Have I Ever. It was my turn, and I said, “Never have I ever had a crush on a girl,” and I put one finger down. My sister was shocked, and asked repeatedly if I was bisexual. I told her that I was gay, but that it wasn’t important, and that it didn’t change anything. We had a great conversation, and I’m so thrilled to know that she loves me no matter what! (F/13/Lesbian)

When I came out to my boyfriend, he dumped me but then came running back minutes later. “I realized I was stupid. Um… will you go out with me again?” I laughed it off and we are still together. (F/19/Pan)

When I came out to my mom, I texted her. She came home and we had the “Gay Talk”. Little did I know she had a girlfriend before she met my dad. She teases me about every girl I talk to now. (15/Lesbian)

When I came out as a lesbian it was at the age of forty to my eight-year-old daughter. I was talking to her about different kinds of families and people and she asked if I was gay. I didn’t answer for a few minutes. I’d never really thought about my sexuality but suddenly everything in my life and all my confusion made sense. I told her that “Mommy IS gay” and asked if her if that was okay. She said it was so long as I “still bought her toys.”

When I came out to my friend (about 30 minutes ago), she had just told me that she thought it was perfectly fine to be LGBT. No one else that I know of thinks this way. She hugged me and bought me ice cream. Maybe coming out isn’t such a bad idea…? (F/15/Bisexual)
Story #1253
When I came out to my mother at age 12, I texted her a long paragraph while she was at work. She texted back saying she would talk about it later, and then during the talk she confessed to being with a girl for 9 months. Long story short, she teases me about every girl I met and told everyone in the family I am a lesbian. Couldn’t have had a more accepting family to support me. (15/Lesbian)

When I came out, it was over text to my best friend. She was supportive, so now a few months later I told my other friend, who also came out to me as bisexual. (F/13/Bisexual)

When I came out, I was 26 and married with 2 kids. My husband freaked, as expected, but the relief I had was so great! Now I am learning just what it is to be a lesbian lady!
