When I Came Out

When I came out to my brother, his reply was “I’m a lesbian too”! I love him!!

When I came out, I told my best friend I was bisexual. He smiled and said, “That’s fine.” Now he tells me he had known for years I am gay!

When I came out to my high school about having gay parents, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Not only did I get a lot of compliments on my column, I didn’t get a single negative comment. Everything went better than expected.

When I came out I realized how supportive a family can truly be. They have stood by me my entire life, but I must admit I was scared that would change. I have an amazing support system in my family and friends.

When I came out to my mother, I called her and said, “Mom, I have something to tell you,” and I started to cry. She said, “Oh my God, what’s wrong?” “Mom, I’m gay.” She paused and said, “You interrupted me scrubbing toilets for this? What do you want, a button? You are my son and a gift no matter what.”

When I came out to my cousin she said, “Phew, that obviously means Emily is not pregnant.” I had to go to the rest of my family and explain that I was gay, and not interested in getting my best friend pregnant.

When I came out to my boyfriend, he smiled and kissed my forehead. “You are a beautiful person, no matter who you’re attracted to. I’m glad you picked me.”

When I came out to my family, I did it by e-mail. I don’t know why I was so scared; my parents have always been there for me and still are!

When I came out I was scared that people wouldn’t accept me and that I would lose people close to me. In retrospect, the opposite happened. I am closer to people now than I have been my entire life.

When I came out to my high school friend, she came out to me, too!
